Since Christmas I've been working my way through the martial arts and wuxia canon. I've seen most of the Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Stephen Chow, and Bruce Lee films, as well as every Tsui Hark film I can get ahold of, but I've just gotten into the Shaw Brothers films. So far I've watched:

The Flying Guillotine
Master of the Flying Guillotine
The Vengeful Beauty
Shaolin Mantis
The One-Armed Swordsman
Return of the One-Armed Swordsman
The New One-Armed Swordsman
Have Sword, Will Travel
The Water Margin
All Men Are Brothers
Dirty Ho

... and a few others that I'm forgetting.

I have The 36th Chamber of Shaolin and Mad Monkey Kung Fu on order, and I've heard Come Drink with Me is a must-see.

Other favorites?

Ummm, so yesterday i picked up another copy (my other got ruined) of celestial's 36th chamber of shaolin, and i noticed an issue with the audio. If i watch it in stereo there is a major latency problem between L/R audio. Which is odd because i own a shitload of celestial released films and i've never had this happen. Was there a recall on the 2003 version of the 36th chamber? Im just wondering if anyone else had this problem.

Hi I just joined, i was wondering if any of you folks would there where I could get my hands on a copy of Buddha's Palm in region one or zero region on DVD. Not to be confused with Buddha's Palm & Dragon Fist. I can only seem to find VCDs or Region 3 discs. I should really just invest in a universal regions dvd player.

Edit: I ended up finding a Thai region zero version, with somewhat decent english subs.

hey hey everyone how's it going!

well, the celestial reissue schedule for the first half of 2005 is out, and i'm REALLY REALLY EXCITED!!!! additionally, two films which i have slated for my weekly film festival at the downtown library here in kansas city mo usa in march/april -- heroes of the east (shaolin challenges ninja) and clan of the white lotus -- are both getting the treatment JUST IN TIME FOR ME TO SHOW THE BETTER VERSIONS!!!

however, i am kinda sad that i won't be able to share the great corny english dubbed dialog of shaolin challenges ninja -- the best is when gordon refers to his new wife's ninjitsu techniques as being evil and she snaps with her finger in his face "ARE YOU CALLING ME EVIL?" heh she reminds me of my girlfriend every time!

btw, of the six films i'm showing on sundays through march and april, FIVE of 'em are shaw brothers! and all five will be celestial reissues! i'm even bringin my region-free dvd player in to show 'em!

here's the lineup of the festival:

3/6 - house of flying daggers
3/13 - come drink with me
3/20 - heroes of the east (shaolin challenges ninja)
4/3 - the magic blade
4/10 - 8 diagram pole fighter
4/24 - clan of the white lotus

btw -- has anyone seen brave archer 2, 3, and/or 4????? i've got 1 and really like it, and am considering possibly doing a run of all 4 films in the next installment of the festival . . . any opinions???

does anyone have experience with the site www.dddhouse.com ???? specifically the delivery turnaround time (it's via hong kong air). i am in the midwest of the united states.

the nice thing about this website is that they have just about all of the celestial shaw brothers releases, and including shipping, are less than $20 -- i'm getting the legendary weapons of china release to replace the crappy ground zero one for my film festival on the 19th!

hello everyone, great to see a shaw brothers forum!

welp, i have just recently made inroads on the shaw brothers catalog, thanks to celestial and their reissue series. i've got a few others as well -- off the top of my head i've got:

twelve gold medallions
heroic ones
legendary weapons of china
five deadly venoms
shaolin challenges ninja
brave archer 1
avenging eagle
dirty ho
executioners from shaolin
fist of the white lotus
master killer/36th chamber

and i've got a few more on the way off of ebay including come drink with me!

anyway, i am a HUGE gordon liu/liu clan fan -- anything with these guys will get my attention.

5:18 pm - Five Fingers of Death

Does anybody know if Celestial Pictures has released a DVD of Five Fingers of Death? I searched pokerindustries.com for it and I can only dig up the crappy English DVD. I'm also looking for Deadly Angels as well, also of which I'm not sure if Celestial Pictures put out on DVD or not.

current mood: curious

One of my favorite aspects of Shaw Bros. films is the music. I have yet to see a compilation of music from Shaw Bros. films, and there is something wrong with that.

10:22 am - Damn the Shaw Brothers

Everytime I watch the Shaw Brothers and one of their good movies, I find it harder and harder to watch the crappy kung fu movies that make up so much of my collection. It's a love/hate relationship, and all I can do is search for more SB movies. My favorite so far: Shaolin Challenges Ninja. The main girl could've been cuter, but everything else was sweet.
